A former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has announced that he will not seek any political position in the 2027 general elections. He emphasized that his renewed engagement in politics is aimed at fostering credible leadership across all levels of government.
El-Rufai made this statement in Kaduna during a reception for new members who transitioned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which is led by Aliyu Bello.
The former governor indicated that his original intention after leaving office in 2023 was to withdraw from partisan politics. However, he noted that recent events have prompted him to re-enter the political arena, not for personal gain, but to contribute supportively.
El-Rufai also criticized the current administration, asserting that Nigerians do not require further clarification to identify its deficiencies.
He stated, “This government does nothing but lie every day. I am not contesting for anything. I don’t want to go to the Senate. I am not contesting for any position. That’s why I am calling on you, let us join hands and ensure we remove the oppressors.
“When I completed my term as governor of Kaduna State, I planned to take a break; however, given the current circumstances, I believe we must fulfill our responsibilities to promote better leadership. That is why we are re-engaging in politics,” he remarked.
According to El-Rufai, his current priority is to mentor and support young individuals, women, and reform-oriented Nigerians to take charge of the political process.
He encouraged the youth in Kaduna to participate in the ongoing voter registration initiative.
“In Lagos and Osun, at least 600,000 individuals registered. But in Kaduna, only 60,000. Anyone who is 18 years old should go and register, even using their phone. Registration is what grants you the right to choose who governs you,” El-Rufai stated.
