Kenneth Okonkwo, a former spokesperson for the Labour Party, has asserted that the only viable strategy for the opposition to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections is to establish a coalition. Okonkwo expressed his belief that such a coalition would materialize, although he refrained from naming a potential leader.
He stated, ‘As we approach 2027, I am confident that a coalition will form. I cannot predict whether it will involve Peter Obi and Atiku, but it is essential for the opposition to make a significant impact.’ When asked if failing to create this coalition would render Tinubu invincible, Okonkwo responded, ‘He would simply walk into victory. No single candidate can defeat Tinubu in 2027, as in Nigeria, one must not only win but also ensure the security of that victory.’
He further noted that if the elite can unite as they did in 2014 to challenge Goodluck Jonathan in 2015, they could successfully unseat Tinubu in 2027. Regarding the recent defections of opposition members to the APC, Okonkwo attributed this trend to the belief that the APC would manipulate election results in their favor in 2027, describing it as absurd for individuals to seek refuge in a collapsing structure.
While he confirmed his resignation from the Labour Party, Okonkwo clarified that he has not joined any other political party, emphasizing his cautious approach to future decisions. He concluded by advocating for a coalition among all opposition parties.
