The National Assembly Committees have secured a N50 billion increase in the Federal Government’s housing budget, reversing an earlier cut by the Budget Office. The move aims to strengthen the housing sector, create jobs, and address outstanding liabilities.
The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, revealed this during his ministry’s 2025 Sector Retreat in Lagos, themed “Actualizing the Renewed Hope Agenda for Housing and Urban Development: Examining Strategies, Identifying Opportunities to Boost Scale and Impact.”
Musa Dangiwa stated that the increased budget allocation would strengthen the ministry’s ability to implement key projects, create more jobs, and clear inherited liabilities, ultimately boosting the economy.
According to Arc. Dangiwa, the additional funding aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the current administration, reinforcing the government’s commitment to tackling challenges in the housing sector. He acknowledged the sector’s past neglect but assured stakeholders of his dedication to collaborating with the National Assembly and other key partners to drive the successful implementation of the ministry’s initiatives.
The increased budget allocation is set to bolster ongoing housing projects, including 14 active construction sites for 10,112 housing units, which are now nearing completion.The funds will support the National Land Registration and Titling Programme, a joint initiative with the World Bank aimed at streamlining property ownership and enhancing investor confidence.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, Aminu Tambuwal, reaffirmed lawmakers’ commitment to supporting policies and legislative frameworks that enhance efficiency in the housing sector. He emphasized that the National Assembly would continue collaborating with the ministry, its agencies, and stakeholders to ensure housing initiatives align with the Renewed Hope Agenda and international best practices.
Tambuwal highlighted the importance of funding priority projects to enable the ministry to fulfill its mandate effectively. These include the Renewed Hope City and Estates Programme, the National Housing Programme, the construction and rehabilitation of Federal 2 Secretariats, and the settlement of outstanding liabilities to local contractors.
