The Ministry of Power revealed that the Federal Government has finalized the plans to construct a super grid to stop persistent power grid failure.

Mr Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power who attended the China-Africa Cooperation explained that the recent state of the national grid cannot support the vision for the power sector. According to him, “If we look at the strength, the capacity and the age of our existing network on the national grid, it cannot really support our vision for the power sector hence the need for the construction of the Western and Eastern super grid,”

He further said 90 per cent of the required approval for the super grid project will be completed very soon and also that the President is in full support of the initiative as this will improve the transmission network, stabilize the grid ,expand the capacity and the flexibility of the national grid.

The announcement comes months after former Minister of Power Barth Nnaji advocated for the construction of a super grid to put an end to the persistent power grid failure. He mentioned that the current grid structure was not good enough and keeps collapsing and had previously sought the approval of the Federal Executive Council to build a 765KV super grid network that would rise above the existing 330KV network.

Nnaji praised the current power minister, Adebayo Adelabu, for revitalizing the super grid project, highlighting its critical role in delivering electricity from major power plants such as the Manbilla Power Plant, which is anticipated to produce over 10,000 megawatts upon its completion.

It is worth noting that Nigeria’s national grid has experienced over five collapses in the year 2024 causing widespread blackouts and putting Nigerians into darkness highlighting the immediate need for reliable power. The Federal Government’s proposal to build a super grid is seen as an important step towards tackling the situation and enhancing the country’s power sector.
