More than 1,000 northern Islamic clerics have called on President Bola Tinubu to reconsider his plan to seek re-election in 2027, citing persistent killings, kidnappings and terrorism in parts of the country.
The demand was contained in a communique issued after a national conference on the state of the nation under the Tinubu administration and the 2027 general elections, held in Kano State.
The conference was organised by the clerics under the umbrella of Ko Da Naka, in collaboration with the AFAQ Educational Foundation.
The clerics said the government must take urgent steps to address insecurity, particularly in the North-West and other affected areas.
They warned that if the administration failed to improve the security situation, Nigerians should reject Tinubu’s candidacy in the 2027 election and support candidates they believe can provide better leadership.
The group also criticised some of the Federal Government’s economic policies, including the removal of fuel subsidy, changes to the naira exchange-rate system, electricity tariff increases and tax reforms.
According to the clerics, the policies have contributed to increased hardship among ordinary Nigerians.
They said the government should review policies that are worsening the cost of living and focus more on improving the welfare and security of citizens.
