Segun Sowunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has said Peter Obi will need a strong political structure to mount a serious challenge in the 2027 presidential election.
Sowunmi said Obi’s popularity and support among Nigerians would not be enough to secure victory at the polls without an organised political structure capable of mobilising voters across the country.
He made the comment while discussing the emerging political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, winning a presidential election requires more than public enthusiasm, stressing the importance of political organisation, grassroots mobilisation and structures across the different parts of Nigeria.
Sowunmi also referenced the political situation in the South-East, including the position of governors in the region and the Federal Government’s projects there.
He maintained that political candidates seeking the presidency must build broad alliances and structures beyond their traditional areas of support.
The 2027 presidential race is already generating increased political activities, with several politicians and political groups positioning themselves ahead of the election.
Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party, has continued to maintain a strong presence in Nigeria’s political space, particularly among younger voters.
