39 Constitutional Amendment Bills Scale Second Reading In Reps

Thirty-nine bills proposing amendments to the Constitution have successfully passed their second reading in the House of Representatives. These bills address a range of areas, including judicial reforms, electoral processes, security and policing, inclusive governance, and legislative matters, among others.

Among the proposed amendments are:

A bill aimed at modifying the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to facilitate the creation of state and local government police forces.

A bill designed to amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), stipulating that general elections for the presidency, state governorships, National Assembly, state Houses of Assembly, and local government councils should occur simultaneously on a date determined by the Independent National Electoral Commission in collaboration with the National Assembly.

A bill intended to amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, cap. c23, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1999, concerning the authority to proclaim a new Assembly by the Clerk or the National Assembly/Clerk of the House Assembly, and to empower the Chief Justice of Nigeria to announce the inauguration of the National Assembly.

A bill proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to establish the Federal Capital Territory House of Assembly.

A bill aimed at revising the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), to ensure the inclusion of special seats for persons with disabilities in Nigeria’s federal, state, and local government legislative bodies.

A bill proposing to amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to allow public servants to participate in healthcare education, production, and services beyond agricultural activities.

A bill intended to amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, cap. c23, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, to establish and empower a commission for the registration and regulation of political parties.

A proposed legislation aimed at amending the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, seeks to ensure that all appeals resulting from election petition tribunals are resolved before the inauguration of the president-elect, vice-president-elect, governor-elect, deputy governor-elect, and members-elect of both the national and state assemblies.

Another proposed legislation intends to modify the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), granting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) the authority to oversee elections for local government area councils.

Additionally, a bill is proposed to amend Sections 68(1)(g) and 109(1)(g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), mandating that members of the national assembly and state house of assembly must officially resign from their political party prior to any defection.

Furthermore, a bill is introduced to amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, cap. c23, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, with the aim of establishing a national local government electoral commission as an autonomous entity responsible for organizing, conducting, and supervising elections for chairpersons and councilors in all local governments throughout the federation, including the area councils of the Federal Capital Territory.
