Tinubu Appoints John Obafunwa As NIMR DG

President Bola Tinubu has endorsed the appointment of Professor John Obafunwa as the new Director-General (DG) of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR).

Professor Obafunwa takes over from Professor Babatunde Salako, whose tenure expires on July 23, 2024.

An assertion by Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity), Chief Ajuri Ngelale, said the appointment takes effect from July 24, 2024.

President Tinubu then stretched out his appreciation to Professor Salako for his service to the country.

Professor Obafunwa qualified in medicine from the University of Lagos in 1980, following which he passed through practical experience in Anatomic Pathology (morphological study of diseases), graduating in May 1987.

He later sub-specialized in Forensic Pathology in Scotland (1991) and bagged a law degree from England (2004). He has a few other academic certifications and holds membership in different professional bodies in the US, UK and Nigeria.
